I am curious to know what other people take for their reactive arthritis. My son-in-law is suffering badly from his. They have just put him on enbrel but am curious if other people have had better luck with other medications.

Hi Carol, after doing quite a bit of research for my mum who suffers with bad IBS for many years now, I came across your book and my mum has now been on the low starch diet for 3 weeks. She has found in the main that her bad heartburn has stopped, the bloating had gone down and the feeling of nausea was less but not gone completely. Today she is feeling really down as her stomach has blown right up and she feels awful. she said that she has not eaten anything different apart from 3 italian chocolates but I am trying to keep her motivated as she is feeling like nothing works for her. The only thing she has not done yet is to purchase iodine - do you think by not testing foods, this is why the symptoms have come back? I am just looking for some words of encouragement for her and any extra advice - I told her she should keep a food diary - do you think that is a good idea. she is also a little confused about what vegetables are safe for her to eat.

thank you for taking the time to read this and i do hope to hear from you.

best wishes,

Dear Ms Sinclair,

My name is Bogdan Cristescu, from Bucharest Romania. I'm suffering from AS for over 4y now and heard less than 1 month ago about the starch free diet which I embraced since. I'm currently reading your book to deepen my knowledge and perfect the diet - thank you very much for your effort in putting it together. I dare to ask the following questions, if you are kind enough to help:
- After how many hours after eating the wrong food, the AS pains kick in? I'm tring to identify what I can/cannot tolerate ans this would help me better recognise the problematic foods.
- Is hemp tolerated in the starch free diet? I found a local company which produces hemp flour and protein powder which would be very useful in the fasting period, when I give up meat, eggs and dairy.
- Are lemons recommended? I'm having a big flare after introducing lemons in my diet. The only one other thing I've introduced together with lemon is raw pumpkin seed, but I read they are safe.

Thank you very much again for all your efforts in helping us fight AS. I love the days when I feel ok and I can stand up and move around without any ache following me.

Kind regards

Linda, when having a flare, a three day apple fast is usually a good option. Many people with AS do it with good results. I am saying this but without any personal experience, just what i've discused with other AS patients in foruns. I am actually going to try it out tomrrow...
Best of luck.

Carol. I have bought about 8 copies of your book. I have HLAB27 and come from a family of six kids, and I have two kids myself. My son is positive for HLAB27. I want to know what i can do easily for him and his grandparents to make it easy to care for him nutritionally. I follow your diet to a T. But that's easy. I get up up - cook brekkie and bobs your uncle. But for a 12 year old boy its too easy to have cereal and bread isn't. And his grandparents are trying but can't afford to buy bacon and eggs. SO my question is....in a child, is it imperative to follow the diet - am I going to exacerbate his condition but not adhering to the diet when he is with his extended family?
PS He's so good with the diet and follows it to a T except for gluten free sausages which he has taken a huge liking to over Christmas ;-)
Does is help to follow a slight gluten free diet or is that a mute point. For the child.
For me I know it is - i even sniff anything with starch in it and I am in a state!
Can you look at a book for children to help them deal with it? It is imperative that children follow the diet strictly?
Cheers

I bought the book and it has been a life saver . I have Enteropathic Spondylitic Arthritis, Crohn's and microscopic colitis. Nothing helped me but this diet. It would take me a good hour in the morning to be able to limber myself up enough to move around and the flares of the bowel diseases were unbearable. I was just wondering what is advised for diet during a flare. I am afraid I was very irresponsible during Thanksgiving and ate everything I should not have eaten for the entire week. Well, surprise ... I am in a terrible flare. I searched through the book and couldn't find anything about the diet during a flare, perhaps I am just overlooking it. Could you please help. I am back on the diet but I am not sure where to start. Please help. Thank-you for your time and thank-you for such an amazing diet. Now I just need to grow up and buckle down for good.

You could have been writing about me and my story. I have eaten no starch now for over a year and feel and look wonderful. Nothing would tempt me to eat startch its just not worth the pain and suffering. I have the AS gene too.
thanks for helping so many people out there find answers.

National Ankylosing Spondylitis Society 2009 AGM / Symposium:-

Dear Carol,

Are you or Professor Ebringer likely to attend this weekend's UK National Ankylosing Spondylitis AGM/Symposium in Reading, UK this coming Saturday 21st November 2009?

I am hoping to go along myself as a member of NASS and also as a grateful follower of your low/starch/starch-free diet. It has really changed my life so much and I am so grateful that I met Professor Ebringer at the last NASS Symposium in Bristol 3 years ago.

If you are going along I will definitely go as I would dearly love for you to be there when I try to tell others about the diet and by the same degree I could back you up when/if you or Professor Ebringer stand up and tell the other AS people about the diet and I can fully endorse the effects as a sufferer who has been all but cured.

Please let me know so that I can confirm my plans for Saturday.

And keep up the good work!

Best wishes,
